Overview:
How to access and use the best legal research tools so you make sure that you have access to up to date statute, case law and precedents and informed academic discussion of legal issues. The course will look at legal research sites such as Practical Law, Westlaw, Lexis Nexis and Lawtel. We will also look at background search facilities such as google. Finally we will consider the best academic books on local government and other key areas that will local government lawyers encounter.

We will include research exercises and a quiz.
Duration: Half a day (3 training hours) including lunch

Presenter profiles:
John Riddell is a Partner in Weightmans with 30 years experience of public law. He is the EM Lawshare client partner and has handled many areas of local authority law including litigation, governance, freedom of information and data protection. He is currently involved in legal research as he studies for a part time LLM at the University of Nottingham. He has overall responsibility for the EMLS precedent bank.
Ken Slade is Weightmans’ Principal Professional Support Lawyer and has worked in knowledge management and professional support at the firm for more than 12 years. Qualified in October 1996, he spent his early career as a claimant personal injury lawyer at several firms on Merseyside. Since completing an MBA in legal practice in 2003 and joining Weightmans in November 2004, he has focussed on best practice, training, KM and all aspects of professional support, focussing specifically, since 2010, on supporting the firm’s Public Sector business line and practice areas.
Tony Simmonds, University of Nottingham teaches legal research to all levels of students at the University. In a former role he designed e-learning content and wrote the legal research manual for the (then) College of Law.
