Seminar overview

This seminar will provide an overview of homelessness and allocations, areas which are principally governed by Part VI and Part VII of the Housing Act 1996. The speakers will break down important legal and procedural principles and provide practical guidance.

This seminar will be at an introductory/intermediate level and would be suited to local authority housing officers and those making homelessness decisions, as well as others with an interest in homelessness and allocations.

Topics to be covered include:

  • An outline of the key provisions of Part VI and Part VII Housing Act 1996, including various sub-topics such as priority need and intentional homelessness;
  • Decisions and reviews;
  • Legal challenges.

Duration: Half a day (3 CPD points) including lunch

Speaker profiles:

Joe Walker is a Solicitor in the Litigation Department at Sharpe Pritchard LLP. He regularly advises on homelessness matters and acts for local authorities in homelessness appeals under s.204/s.204A of the Housing Act 1996 and judicial reviews. He has been involved in several reported Court of Appeal cases.

Greg Carson at Lambeth Council has over 20 years working in housing law, specialising in housing management agreements, and right to manage.
