Seminar overview

An advanced session for those who are familiar with RIPA.

Review of Commissioner’s 2015 update followed by a  practical workshop looking at examples of directed surveillance and CHIS applications.’

Speaker Profile: 

John Riddell is the head of the police and local government team at Weightmans. He has advised the police and local authorities on RIPA issues and defamation issues over a number of years. He was one of only a handful of lawyers nationally to be given a star rating in Chambers Guide to the Law 2014.

Olwen Dutton leads Bevan Brittan’s local authority governance team. She has extensive experience at a senior level working in house in local government and also in the Audit Commission. Before joining Bevan Brittan Olwen was Chief Executive of the West Midlands LGA. She is a non-executive director of a large Acute NHS Heath Trust in the Midlands and brings her knowledge of the health service to her role leading Bevan Brittan’s work on health and social care. She also advises local authorities on governance, standards, constitutional arrangements and vires.

Naomi Matthews, Senior Solicitor currently works at Nottingham City Council specialising in Criminal litigation. Naomi qualified in 1997 and did her articles at Freshfields in the City of London but post qualification has worked mainly in different criminal firms. Naomi has both defended and prosecuted criminal matters.  She obtained higher rights for the Crown Court in 2009.  Naomi carries out advice work and auditing work in relation to RIPA and now carries out both internal and external training.
